There is no room for pretense in Mahesh Manjrekar's latest work. A raw, gritty look at the world of the ravaged, ‘City Of Gold’ is as powerful in portraying a bereft working class as ‘Molly Maguires’ was about Irish mine workers... Except for the fact that there is no room for pretty visuals in ‘City Of Gold’.

Manjrekar's chawl-life, captured on camera with merciless frankness by Ajit Reddy, is a bleak world of dreamers and losers who are often the one and the same. His heroes (if we may call the young characters that) are offered no hope of solace or redemption. This is the side of the slum that Danny Boyle missed when he made 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

'City Of Gold' is neither stylish nor swanky enough to attract elitist readings of poverty. Fiercely radical in thought and intensely socialistic in execution, the film plunges beneath the poverty line to emerge with characters whose despair is not an act for the camera. The sweat and grime, the corruption and crime are characters of their own in Manjrekar's chaotic world.

Mumbai never looked murkier and less inviting.

Taking a panoramic look at the lives of thousands of mill workers in Mumbai who went on an indefinite strike in 1982 is like trying to hold the ocean in a tea cup. Manjrekar, in what could easily be rated as his finest, most cogent work to date, does just that.

He holds a universe in the eye of the camera. It is a world of the doomed and damned, no frills attached.

His return to fine form and the enrapturing energy level that sweeps across a multitude of lives without trivialising any of the characters are reasons enough to celebrate the joys of neo-realistic cinema.

But wait... 'City Of Gold' not only marks the return of a storyteller who tells it like it is, without the comfort of shortcuts. It's also a macroscopic look at people who populate the fringes. Their silent protests are seldom heard in cinema.

Not for a second do we feel any comforting distance from the misery of Manjrekar's characters.

Manjrekar shoots his characters' emotions in tight, comprehensive close-ups but wastes no time shedding excessive tears over their lives. The editor (Sarvesh Parab) cuts the raw material with ruthless economy, leaving no room for humbug and certainly no space for commercial embellishments.

So the question, what happened to those thousands of mill workers who were overnight rendered bankrupt after the mills closed down? You will find some uncomfortable answers in 'City Of Gold'. But most of the time you will be faced with questions about the quality of life we choose to hand over to those who are economically and emotionally weak.

Would this film have worked without the actors who don't look like they are facing a camera? The whole batallion of characters flicker to life as though they were a part of an extended family shot by hidden cameras for a reality show.

Television actor Karan Patel as the youngest scion of Manjrekar's troubled family is a revelation. He portrays pain, humiliation, angst, compromise and anger with complete authority.

This is a sly tongue firmly and stubbornly in cheek, slick and chic comedy about a loser, or a panauti - a word that recurs ad nauseum in this glorious gasbag of giggles, winks, nudges and innuendos packaged with such polished panache that you don't really care what the inter-relations in the parodic plot finally signify.

Maybe they signify nothing more than a numbing but pleasantly diverting nothingness. But who the heck cares, as long as the tumble of confusions generates a hilarious havoc.

'Housefull', as the title suggests, is chockful of characters who bump into one another and into hard surfaces (including the unresolved edges in the plot) without injury. It's all done in ricocheting rhythms of laughter that rises from the pit of the plot's belly and moves upwards towards us, sometimes missing its target.

More than the screenplay (Milap Zaveri, Sajid Khan, Vibha Singh) which moves helter-skelter in every direction away from the centre of the plot and just about succeeds in coming to a reasonably coherent conclusion, it is the bevy of characters who are positioned in the screenplay with a supreme sense of pyramidal aptness.

Every actor shines because he or she knows the idea is to have fun and to transmit that fun to the audience. It's the actors' responsibility to make the maze of inter-relations hold together. They succeed.

Yes, sometimes the actors seem to enjoy the comedy of energetic error more than we do. Beyond a point how many slap-happy slipping-on-the-floor nudge-nudge-wink-wink oops-we-did-it-again rolling of the eyes biting-of-the-tongue jokes can we take??

But somehow it all holds together. Like a jigsaw done in the pages of a comic book and then put on celluloid, 'Housefull' evokes smiles and chuckles in cramped and wide-open spaces.

There is a casino in London where our loser-hero is beckoned to stem losses, a casino waitress (Lara Dutta) whose traditional Gujarati father (Boman Irani, as confidently spontaneous as ever) has disowned her for eloping with a man of her choice, a stern government agent (Arjun Rampal, the only actor who doesn't get to smile in this chirpy chuckle-fest), a sexy widow (Lilette Dubey) and assorted characters who come and go in a whoosh of wacky misunderstandings, confused identity and half-resolved comic snarls.

Sajid Khan's earlier film 'Heyy Babyy' was a minty mix of mirth and maudlinism. 'Housefull' is a full-on flamboyant farce. Strangely there's a subtlety even tenderness at times, in the way Sajid Khan handles the satirical material centred on the theme of a loser who brings bad luck on himself so often that he begins to wonder if there's a method to the madness of his destiny.

Unlike most situational comedies 'Housefull' chooses the lower octaves of storytelling. The scale is pitched down. Even when the characters scream their lungs out we don't wince in discomfort. This is the most well-behaved comedy in recent times with an array of pert but low-key performances.

Stripped of all buffoonery Akshay Kumar does his most delicately balanced comic act ever. There's a mellow maturity to the way he balances farce with a more underplayed style of comedy. Riteish Deshmukh provides Akshay with the right cues. So do the rest of the actors. Among the three glamorous and sexy ladies Lara Dutta has the best comic timing. Mention must be made of Chunky Pandey who brings the roof down with his Italian-Punjabi accent and burlesque.

'Housefull' looks and feels right. The climax in 'Buckingham Palace' (replete with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles look-alikes) depends too closely on a literal outflow of laughter gas. But that's okay. Delicacy of comic presentation is not a claim that 'Housefull' makes. But moments of muffled tenderness just happen in the plot's confounded journey of a loser from no-love to know-love.

Bollywood3000 News: We are nearly five months into the 2010 and while we have yet to see a film do exceptionally well at the box office, we have also yet to see our reigning queens take top slot on the charts. 2009 belonged to the likes of Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and so on. However, none of the above mentions and otherwise, have opened their accounts in 2010.

According to film critic Tarun Adarsh, this should be considered "the lull before the storm."
The "reigning" queens have much to offer in 2010 and additionally are at equal "par" with one another, "All of them have the same advantages and disadvantages," he claimed.

The ladies themselves are pretty secure and unfeathered by the competition. Katrina Kaif explained, "We actresses are all grown-ups. We don’t make our career decisions based on idle gossip." And yet, Kaif decided that she could not be in the same film that co-starred Priyanka Chopra and walked out. Of course as a rebuttal, Chopra has claimed nonstop that it was she who was the first choice for Tees Maar Khan and not Kaif. Besides Tees Maar Khan, Kaif will play a politician in Rajneeti which is set to release in June.

Chopra went on to claim that she is so "consumed" by work and does not care about any other actress’ career besides her own. "I have four films to complete by February 2011. And also one season of Khatron Ke Khiladi. So I have no time to pay attention to anyone’s career. I have so much on my own plate and gratefully so," she clarified. You will get to see P.C. in Anjaana Anjaani, Saat Khoon Maaf and as the host of this seasons Khatron Ke Khiladi.

Kareena Kapoor is another actress who has is not bothered by what the trade pundits claim. "People can keep assuming that I’m a girl in love and so I’m less inclined towards work. But that is far from true. I hold a position of power in the industry and I’m not giving it up for anyone or anything," she explained. Kapoor is currently working on Golmaal-3, RA-1 and Siddharth Malhotra’s StepMom remake all coming up in the coming year.

These very film gurus claim that 2010 belongs to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan with over 300 crores being invested in her. Lots of Ash in 2010; she will be seen in Raavan, Action Replay and Guzaarish.

The so-called number game is one that should not be taken seriously. "I’m sometimes No 1, sometimes No 7 or sometimes No 10. The number game is just up to your last film. One film does well they prop you up there, one flops and they push you down. But for me it is about being consistent in my performance," explained Priyanka Chopra.

With all the ladies being outwardly politically correct and all of them claiming to be unmoved by the competition, the fact remains the same: they all want to be numero uno.

After Aishwarya's Raavan in Tamil version, now Hrithik's Kites in Spanish!

Bollywood3000: The world and its favourite senorita would now get to hear Hrithik Roshan speak in Spanish. Besides the 2-hour-10-minute Hindi version and the 1-hour-30-minute English versions of Kites which are releasing worldwide in May, there will now be a Spanish version of the film to come a little later after the two other versions.

Confirming this development, Sanjeev Lamba, CEO of Reliance Big Pictures, says, “Yes, we are indeed on the verge of closing a deal for a Spanish version of Kites. While the Hindi and English versions would cater to a mass audience across the globe keen on seeing Hrithik Roshan, we must not disregard Barbara Mori’s fan following in the Spanish belt.”

According to Lamba, the global interest in watching Hrithik romance Mori puts Kites in a very different league from other Bollywood films. Reliance Big Pictures is now looking at releasing a larger number of prints globally than even 3 Idiots.1700 prints of 3 Idiots had been released in India. Kites is expected to top that figure with approximately 1750 prints in India.

“We will release around 2300 prints across the world. There will be 250 prints in the US and 100 in the UK”, informs Lamba.

The English language version will be released in the US a week after the Hindi version. “The only difference between the Hindi and English versions would be the length. Brett Ratner who has edited the English version took out all the songs and some of scenes which were seen too Indian in spirit. Otherwise both versions are the same in spirit. Out West, audiences don’t have the patience to sit through lengthy foreign films. In the English version that Brett Ratner has cut everything happens super-fast and snappy,” says Lamba.

The length of the Spanish version is expected to be the same as the English version of Kites. Though it is not being said out aloud, Reliance Big Pictures hopes Kites would top the box-office statistics of 3 Idiots in the international market where the 2-hour-40-minute playing time of 3 Idiots was seen to be big hindrance for a wider acceptance by a non-Diaspora audience.

The producers are looking at Kites as the Indian film that would finally crack the Western market.

“Kites is not what the Bollywood formula is perceived to be in the West. The language of love is universal. We’re hopeful that this film will get a new profile of western audiences interested in Indian cinema,” says Lamba with finger crossed.

Barbara Mori is expected to play Hrithik’s host in Mexico when the Spanish version of Kites releases. In a cute manifestation of a cultural exchange programme she has even offered to do a Spanish film with Hrithik.

Katrina Kaif says, Raajneeti is a crucial topic!

Bollywood3000 Updates: Mumbai: Bollywood Hot Actress Katrina Kaif has said that her upcoming flick ''Raajneeti'' is much more than politics, and despite it not being a serious film, it is a crucial topic. "The story in this film is not just what you see in posters or in promos.

You have seen a lot of (these), obviously you have seen it as a political film, but there is a very interesting story behind it. There is a personal story as well, there is romance in the film, there is jealousy, there is bitterness, there is betrayal," said Katrina Kaif.

"It is not a serious film, it is about a serious topic, but it is very entertaining film in the content. Otherwise, you guys all know me well enough to know that I wouldn't do a film, which is not entertaining. This is entertainment of a different sort," she added.

Contrary to speculations that her character in the film was inspired by the Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Kaif said that she had watched the election campaign videos of Gandhi's daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for a first hand know-how on right looks and the body language.

"That is one of the persons whom I have seen, I did particularly like her (Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter of ruling Congress party president Sonia Gandhi) way of talking and the way she talks in public and because we are not basing my character on anybody living or dead," said Katrina Kaif.

"I think I had freedom and Prakash Jha also gave me that freedom to maybe just see somebody I like and try develop a character to that," she added.

Kaif launched the music album of the film along with actor Ranbir Kapoor and Director Prakash Jha here on Tuesday.

Talking about the music of the film, actor Ranbir Kapoor mentioned that Jha has roped in some renowned music composers for the film, and added that music would add to the layers of ''Raajneeti''.

"Raajneeti is a family-political thriller and I think the music just helps to be more engaging to the audience, but don''t expect us to be singing songs or doing anything," said Ranbir Kapoor. Director Prakash Jha said the film is the story of power-seekers, people who continuously seek power like power in personal life, power in professional life and in political standing.

Fifty-eight year old Prakash Jha returns to the silver screen this June with ''Raajneeti'', a big-budget political thriller that has a multitude of stars such as Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgan and Nana Patekar.
The flick has been shot in Bhopal is expected to hit the theaters on June 4, 2010.

"It's a brilliantly written script and I am looking forward to working with Hrithik. I don't know him at all. The film will go on floors in three weeks from now after the release of 'Kites'. The movie has the ability to emerge as progressive new cinema," Katrina told PTI.

The title 'Zindagi...' works very much in favour of the movie as it is a fun, youthful film...telling that you get a chance to live only once, she said.

Shahid and Kareena- may be refusing to promote together their new film!

Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor may ruin the chances of their new film as they are refusing to promote it together.

Milenge Milenge co-stars the ex-lovers, who ended a three-year relationship in 2007.

Shooting began in 2004, but the film has been besieged by delays, as well as rumours that the former couple refused to work on its post-production.

It is reportedly based on the romance Serendipity.

Producer Boney Kapoor told the Hindustan Times: "Shahid shot for the video, but I am yet to get a nod from Kareena. I think she is busy shooting for Golmaal 3. I am waiting for her to get free.

"The film will definitely release on June 25. It'd be nice if they promote the film together. But I don’t have a final call on it. They have agreed to promote it, but not together, yet."

The busy gal has promised photos, updates, etc. but only when she has the time to do so.

But her optimistic fans will probably say something is better than nothing.

The gorgeous beauty is sort of being trained to be a good mother all thanks to ‘Tees Maar Khan’ director Farah Khan’s babies.

According to latest reports, the actress is so much enamored by the director’s triplets, Czar, Diva, Anya that she rushes to be with them whenever she is free.

A source said to a news daily that while shooting for ‘Tees Maar Khan’ at Malshej ghat, the lovely actress met the three babies in their specially made nursery. After that Kat couldn’t stay away with them and even the babies took to the actress. Apparently, the minute Farah would call for a ‘cut’, Katrina would rush to the babies; play with them and shower affection on them. In other words, she loved baby-sitting for Farah’s kids.

Insiders reveal that the actress preferred staying with the babies more than being with ‘good friend’ Ranbir Kapoor.

We are sure that here is a great ‘mom’ in making but we can’t help asking – who will be the great ‘dad’?

Bollywood Actress Aishwarya Rai's New Film ‘Raavan’ Music Launch Today!

Bollywood3000 Updates: Today the fans of Mani Ratnam have reasons to be happy. After much waiting and anticipation, the music of the director’s upcoming flick ‘Raavan‘ is going to be released today.

A few days back the first official teaser of the film was released in the web  and it has managed to create quite a sensation. The star couple Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan are counting on the success of the film and the audio release is a part of the pre-release tasks.

The tracks of the movie have been composed by veteran lyricist Gulzar and the music has been done by Oscar winner music director A R Rahman. Like every Mani Ratnam movie, “Raavan”’s music is likely to become popular with the masses. The director gives special importance to music in all his movies and his movies that do not do well at the box office have excellent soundtrack.

Southern film actor Vikram has come to Mumbai to be present at the ‘Raavan‘ music release, as it has been reported. A lot of Bollywood stars and bigwigs are supposed to be present at the Raavan Audio launch ceremony. As the promos on the TV channels have revealed, the Raavan songs have an earthy feel to them.

The music of ‘Raavan‘ is releasing on T Series. It will further fuel the hype surrounding the movie. The film will be released in June as it has been confirmed. The fans of the director can download the wallpapers of the film from its official site. The site also reveals how Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will look in the film.

He claims that he can churn out only hits from his directorial ventures, has gone a step further this time, by announcing that his next film will have the two most popular stars of bollywood, namely Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Even though now the director is a bit busy with his to be released ‘Houseful’, his next focus is going to be with these two most wanted stars of bollywood.

Akshay and Shahrukh have only appeared in a song sequence in the film ‘Hey Baby’, which is co-incidentally Sajid Khan’s first directorial venture, and this will be the first time that that any director has ever cast the two ever popular faces of bollywood together in an entire film as co- stars. The flick is touted to be an action filled one.

But, knowing the directors penchant for creating some very complicated romantic liaisons in his films, we sure should be prepared for some romance thrown in, albeit with some complication involved. Now, we just hope the director does not think of casting another top star as the third romantic lead, which then will lead to a huge ego clash.
